How A Neon Light Works

THE INCANDESCENT BULB

Wire with a very high resistance to the flow of electricity through it becomes white hot and creates light.

There is No Resistant Wire, or filament, in the neon tube. Instead, the tube is filled with neon gas which gives off a bright glow when the current of electricity flows through it.

HOW NEON GIVES LIGHT

Electricity passing through the gas knocks electrons from their orbits.

When the electron flies back into the orbit of its atom, energy in the ofrm of a bright red light is released. This light energy is the source of the tube's glow.
